COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Our community development programme works with the families to help create and consolidate a cooperative which aims to preserve the biodiversity of Tesoro Escondido. In order to successfully comply with the cooperative's main objective, the members will commercialise their high quality cacao (conventional and organic) and craftwork, offer accomodation to biologists who wish to study the region and, in the long-run, establish an eco-tourism project.

Proyecto Washu has been the organisation in charge of this programme and has facilitated workshops, training sessions and various activities for both adults and children of the community. The producers attended workshops on the organic certification, post-harvest techniques, small-producer organisations and permaculture. Many environmental education activities have also been developed with the schools in the region and the producers' children.

An environmental educator has recently been contracted by the project to teach and develop activities with two schools in the region - in Hoja Blanca and Chonta-Duro. The educator's responsibility will be to help the children understand the necessity to protect the rainforest and the animals that live within.
